Turn the corner
at the hilltop and there you have it! A panoramic
view of the bay of Elounda with the Porto Elounda
de luxe Resort right at your feet. Note the sea of
green. It is the only golf course on the island of
Crete. What you do not see here is the challenging
driving range and the putting green.
Rooms and suites
Some rooms have
direct access from their balcony to the large oblong
pools. There is also a Grande Suite with its own
private beach, outdoor pool and garden, indoor pool
and more. Tasteful and simple. This is our kind of
luxury. Soothing to the sight and serene to the soul,
yet pampering you with the amenities you have come
to expect: air conditioning, satellite television,
touch-tone telephone, stocked mini-bar, a safe deposit
box, hair-dryer and a lovely marble bathroom. Some
rooms and suites have private access to large oblong
seawater pools where one will rarely encounter another
swimmer, even when all rooms are occupied.
Bungalows
Bungalows are
situated on the seafront of Porto Elounda meaning
you step off your verandah right onto your sandy
beach or onto platforms on the natural rocks. The
clean waters are singularly inviting, and are prefect
for a swim at any time of the day or night. Privacy
and discretion are an essential part of the design,
so a luscious garden separates the bungalow from
the sun deck, itself being elevated above the seaside
pathway.
Villas
The villas,
each with their own garden and seawater swimming
pool, give you the privacy of a seaside home. Complete
with a bar, dining area and spacious lounge, they
hardly give an excuse to ever leave. They come in
one, two, or three bedroom varieties, each bedroom
having its own bathroom and air-conditioning. There
is also the option of an alternative entrance for
the occupants of the other bedroom.
Restaurants and bars
Right at the
waters edge on the small harbour lies the a la carte
Odysseus tavern where fresh fish is served to the
sound of the lapping waves. The evenings are festive
at the marvelous Playiada, the covered square around
the chapel of Prophet Elias with its fine-dining
restaurant. Traditional cooking really comes into
its own, benefiting from the abundance of fresh olive
oil, basil, rosemary and parsley. Breakfast buffet
is laid here for the occupants of villas and bungalows.
Overlooking the blue vastness and the distant mountains,
the Nafsika restaurant offers English and Continental
breakfast from a rich buffet, and Table d Hote dining
in the evening. Next door is the Kirki bar with many
warm corners and a terrace that will take your breath
away. Down by the beach is the poolside bar for snacks
and refreshments between dips, in the shade of a
robust wooden umbrella made entirely out of chestnut
logs.
Water sports
Water-skiing
is at its best in the early morning, when the waters
are ideal for avid mono-skiers and barefooters to
be towed behind the Nautique. As the wind picks up,
sailors and windsurfers set out to harness the waves,
while snorkelers and Scuba divers find the rocky
seabed bustling with colourful life. There are also
jet skis to rent, parasailing, and speedboat hire.
Tennis & Golf
Our tennis instructor
will be glad to give you a lesson or a match on our
court or on the two green set courts at Elounda Mare.
The Porto Elounda Golf course is the only one on
the island of Crete and provides an excellent environment
for learning the game and for training. The course
is a 9-hole par-3, yet the multiple tee design gives
every hole two playing options, thus giving the impression
of an 18-hole course. The hole lengths range between
55 and 125 meters. The Club House is set amidst a
picturesque Cretan square and offers a pro-shop and
the Porto Elounda Golf Academy where instructor John
Grundy, PGA improves every aspect of your game on
the driving range, the putting green and the course
itself. The training facility is ideal for beginners,
and for those who need to improve aspects of their
game like their short play.
Children
Designed around
the theme of an animal park, KIVOTOS childrens club
is in fact an ark where children play happily in
harmony with nature. A rainbow leads the children
to their playground where all the games have been
designed especially for KIVOTOS and its special character.
A bridge separates the section for the younger ones,
6 month - to 3½ year-olds, from the other section
where the 4 - 8 year-olds are playing their own games.
Playgrounds are both indoors and outdoors especially
designed to protect children from over-exposure to
the sun. A vegetable garden is where children enjoy
themselves while learning how to grow tomatoes and
other Greek vegetables. The children will be given
the chance to plant some typical Greek trees like
olive and carob trees and lemon, orange, and fig
trees. There are two shallow pools attached to KIVOTOS,
properly supervised at all times and equipped with
the most up-to-date water ionization and purification
devices. There is space for resting, and a dining
room and childrens toilets and showers, as well as
a miniature replica of an ancient Greek amphitheater.
The philosophy guiding this program is that the children
learn something about the Greek way of life and Greek
history and culture, while having fun with other
children from a multi-ethnic background. Activities
include: play acting and circus acting; construction
of a doll or a mask; simple Greek kitchen; mini Olympic
games in the water or on the track; ceramics, batik,
drawing and collage with natural media; treasure
hunt; garden cultivation and traditional games in
nature.
Useful information
The Porto Elounda
de luxe Resort is located 70 kms (44 miles) from
Heraklion International Airport. One should either
fly to Athens and take Olympic Airways, Air Greece,
or Cronus Airlines connections, or fly directly to
Heraklion by charter flights from many European cities.
The hotels helicopter-pad allows the option of heli-transfer
from either Athens or Heraklion. Upon arrival, the
hotel can offer a limousine transfer service should
one not wish to take a taxi or rent an automobile.
